  There are now 5 Justices on the SCOTUS who are Catholic. I don’t know if they are liberal or conservative. If a case involving the Catholic Church and child sex abuse reaches their court it will be something to watch. These are the legal minds that shape a nation and by extension a lot of the globe. They aren’t walking away.

  Yes, I admit, I’ve got SCOTUS on the brain. Lol

  the 2014/2015 international conventions have been announced, and will be held in the following cities.... melbourne, australia october 2014london, england august 2014quito, ecuador january 2015frankfurt, germany july 2014athens, greece june 2014seoul, korea september 2014mexico city, mexico november 2014harare, zimbabwe august 2014as always there is a long list of requirements for those wealthy enough to attend - including the requirement to keep your "exemplary status" right up to the day of departure or lose all your money.. there is also a curious paragraph that seems to indicate an element of subterfuge.... special rooming: confidentially, we will be asking the host branch office to poll local brothers to determine if some might be able to provide limited rooming provisions in private homes.

  this information is not to be made known to the applicants in general.

  If the search for private home accommodations was not done “confidentially” you’d have a bunch of people upset they are paying full price.

  Seems like a good reason to keep it hushed.

  Even that might be a stretch because I personally know individuals that not only paid for their trip in full but also covered the costs for several other elderly couples, who could not afford it, to go with them. Maybe they were never made aware that reduced cost or no cost housing may be available to them, but even then, I’m not sure they would have taken advantage of it or wanted the hassles and complications it might have presented.

  Barring those with health issues is interesting. I can hardly see why that would be needed. It’s a lot of effort to travel internationally in the best of health. Maybe there were problems in the past that shaped the policy.

  Its nit picky. There are a hundred other issues that could serve for a blog entry or whatever.

  Even as JWs we knew WT was always thinking of their bottom line and what would put the most contributions in the box. Think of the hotel discount and booking issues we had to deal with each year. Spend months on the phone trying to get a hotel to save $30 a night and then feel compelled to drop your savings in the contribution box.

  So much easier to make one phone call and book a room wherever the hell you wanted.

  Concealed carry Dubs

  i spent a considerable length of time living and working in america (would love to imigrate one day).. almost everyone i worked with and made friends with carried a concealed firearm of somesort.

  i found this pretty interesting and as an avid firearm fan even more so.. so to our american members here... .

  as a jw did you or did you know any practising dubs who carried or if not had firearms for home defence?

  Growing up JW and into my late 20s I spent time in a number of states from NY, FL, CA and a handful between them. JWs in cities and along coastlines didn’t have guns and usually were adamant that guns were a no no for JWs. In every rural area even in CA and FL there were some JWs that had guns like rifles and shotguns. A few had handguns but they were secretive and low profile about them.

  I live in a very anti gun, gun control state. Still I know to this day active JWs that have guns even here. They are tight lipped about it.

  I have never known any JW with a CCL. But it would not surprise me.

  I wish there were more CCL people in general in my state. I would feel safer in public.
